Why We Became a HYROX Club

Sixteen years of watching people chase a number, and what we learned along the way

For Sixteen Years, We've Watched People Chase a Number

For sixteen years, Prahlladh and Khushi have built 1ON1 as a lifestyle retreat, never a weight-loss camp. But we’ve sat across from hundreds of people whose lives had quietly come to revolve around one number on a weighing scale, people carrying over 180 kilos, and people who wanted to lose just 10 or 15. We trained beside them, ate with them, and listened to what they were really afraid of. And across all those years, one thing became impossible to unsee: almost every success, and almost every setback, was measured against that same number.

The Conversation We Kept Having — But People Struggled to Hear

Over and over, we would sit with someone and try to explain, as gently as we could, that the weight was never really the problem. It was a symptom — of years of poor sleep, of a body that had lost its strength, of confidence that had quietly worn thin, of movement that had become inconsistent, of eating that carried more emotion than hunger, of simply never having had a meaningful relationship with fitness at all.

Most people understood this the moment we said it. We could see it land. And yet, almost without exception, they would still walk out the door chasing the same single goal: a lower number by a certain date. Because that was the only goal anyone had ever given them. No one had ever offered them another one.

What We Realised Was Missing Wasn't Another Diet

It took us years to understand what was actually missing, and it wasn’t a better meal plan or a stricter routine — we had already refined both, again and again, quietly and carefully. What was missing was a reason to train that had nothing to do with the scale at all. Something to wake up for that wasn’t a countdown.

We began to notice that the clients who did best — who kept their results and, more importantly, kept their peace of mind — were the ones who had somehow found something else to chase. A hike. A wedding they wanted to dance freely at. A grandchild they wanted to keep up with. The number stopped being the point. It became a quiet side effect of something bigger.

We didn’t have a name for that “something bigger” yet. We just knew we wanted to find a way to offer it to everyone who came to us, not only the fortunate few who stumbled onto it on their own.

Then We Discovered HYROX

HYROX gave us exactly the kind of goal we had been quietly looking for. It’s a global fitness race that combines functional stations — sled pushes, rowing, burpee broad jumps — with running, and it welcomes complete beginners just as warmly as seasoned athletes. For many of our clients, it offered something that had nothing to do with looking a certain way, and everything to do with what their body could actually do.

For one morning, someone who had never once thought of themselves as an athlete could stand inside something built like a stadium event, and simply train. Not lose weight. Train. That distinction, quiet as it is, turned out to matter more than we expected.

Why It Changed the Way We Coach

HYROX didn’t replace our philosophy. It completed it. For the first time, we could still help someone move toward a healthier weight while giving them something far more powerful alongside it: a fitness goal that belonged entirely to them. Instead of waking up asking, “how many kilos have I lost,” people began asking, “can I improve my sled push,” “can I finish my run without stopping,” “can I beat my time from last month.”

That is a quiet but enormous shift. It changes who a person understands themselves to be. They stop living as someone trying to lose weight, and begin living as someone who trains. Weight loss, when it happens, becomes something that follows naturally from that — not the reason they get up in the morning.

Alongside this shift, we changed how we train the body itself. Our altitude training for HYROX conditions the body to work well with less oxygen, quietly building the cardiovascular and muscular endurance that carries someone through a HYROX floor — the ski erg, the sled, the final run — without them needing to think about how they look doing it.

None of this works from a single template, though. No two people arrive with the same history, injuries, fears, or pace, which is why our personalized fitness coaching retreat India stays built around each person individually — the plan adjusts to them, not the other way around.

We're Still a Lifestyle Retreat. Now We Just Have a Finish Line to Train Towards.

We still believe exactly what we believed sixteen years ago: that lifestyle comes first, and that a life well lived matters more than any single number ever could. The only difference now is that alongside helping people build healthier, steadier lives, we can also give them something many of them never imagined possible — a reason to train that isn’t about disappearing, but about becoming stronger, more capable, more themselves.

If any of this sounds familiar — if you’ve spent years measuring yourself against a number that never quite settled — we’d love to talk with you about what training toward something else might feel like.

Join 1ON1 Fitness Retreat as an official HYROX training partner and experience personalized fitness coaching, altitude training for HYROX, and a warm community that trains together — not another weight-loss retreat that ends the day you hit a number.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What is HYROX and how is it different from regular fitness training?

HYROX is a global fitness race that combines functional workouts (like sled pushes, rowing, and burpee broad jumps) with running. Unlike regular gym training, it offers a structured, race-ready goal to work toward — turning everyday workouts into something purposeful and meaningful.

2. Do I need to be fit or have sports experience to start HYROX training?

Not at all. Most of our clients have never called themselves athletes before joining us. Our personalized fitness coaching is designed with care for complete beginners, with training plans built gently around your current fitness level, injuries, and goals.

3. What is altitude training and how does it help HYROX performance?

Altitude training conditions your body to perform well with reduced oxygen levels, quietly building cardiovascular endurance, stamina, and recovery. At 1ON1, our altitude training for HYROX helps clients build the engine needed for race-day stations like the ski erg, rowing, and the final run.

4. How long does it take to prepare for a HYROX race?

Most clients train for 8–16 weeks, depending on where they’re starting from and what they’re hoping for. Our coaches take the time to build a personalized timeline after an initial assessment, so the plan fits your body and your life, rather than following a generic countdown.

5. What results can I expect — weight loss, fitness, or both?

Both — though weight loss becomes a byproduct rather than the target. Clients typically see improved strength, stamina, and body composition, alongside something even more lasting: a quiet shift in how they see themselves — from someone managing weight to someone in training.
